Selected Resources

The EDU Invictus team has provided a select listing of organizations that offer reliable information about learning disabilities and ADHD for parents, educators, adults and professionals.

ADDA provides information, resources and networking opportunities to help adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD).

Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) provides education, advocacy and support for individuals with AD/HD.

International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals with dyslexia, their families and the communities that support them.

Learning Ally (formerly Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic), provides information on over 80,000 recorded textbooks and other classroom materials, from 4th grade through postgraduate levels, available for loan. Individuals with learning disabilities are eligible to participate but must complete the certification requirements.

LD OnLine offers information for parents, teachers, and other interested professionals in the areas of learning disabilities, legal issues, current research, instructional strategies, and personal stories.

National Association for the Education of African American Children with Learning Disabilities includes information and resources provided by an established network of individuals and organizations experienced in minority research and special education. It also provides a parent resource network and publications for teachers, parents, and others.

National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities (NJCLD) Founded in 1975, the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities (NJCLD) is a national committee of representatives of organizations committed to the education and welfare of individuals with learning disabilities.

ReadingRockets.org provides detailed information about learning to read and strategies for supporting struggling readers at home, at school, and in the community. It offers news, practical information, expert advice, and resources for parents, teachers, tutors, child care providers, and policy makers.

SmartKidswithLD.org is the website of Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to parents of children with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorders.

Special Education Guide is a resource for mastering the terminology, procedures and best practices in special education.

Selected Colleges & Universities

The EDU Invictus team has researched and/or visited a cross section of colleges & universities that offer specialized or comprehensive programs & services for students that may have special needs.  The institutions vary from focusing solely on special needs students to those that have specific classes and support programs build into the curriculum.  By no means is this an exhaustive list we wanted to share several institutions that may be of interest.

American University
American University offers a Learning Services Program for college freshmen. This program is designed to help special needs students better transition by building academic and social skills. Students who enroll in this program will receive focused assistance with writing and math, and any additional accommodations they may need. After freshman year, students can access the Academic Support Center for additional assistance.  

Beacon College
Beacon College partners with and engages undergraduates who learn differently.  Students receive individual academic mentoring and full-time access to support services. Class sizes are small and everyone receives structured, individualized attention.  The education and campus culture empowers students along their individual paths to knowledge, self-discovery, and success.

Depaul University
All students and those with special needs have access to the Office of Students with Disabilities.

For additional support, students can participate in the Productive Learning Strategies Program (PLuS Program).  It is designed to assist with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, Asperger’s, OCD or bipolar disorder.  Students in the program will get support, tutoring, advocacy and counseling time with an LD specialist.

Drexel University
Drexel University has an Autism Support Program that is a student-centered program. The program is designed to promote academic competency, self-advocacy, interpersonal skills, independent living & social integration.

Hofstra University
Program for Academic Learning Skills (PALS) program helps students with learning disabilities or attention deficits by pairing them up with a learning specialist, who will work with the student to create an individualized plan designed to meet the unique needs of each student.  

Landmark College
Located in Putney, Vermont, Landmark College is one of a few colleges in the United States that is focused exclusively on student with dyslexia, ADHD and other learning disabilities. Class sizes are small to provide accessible approaches to learning that empower individuals who learn differently to exceed their aspirations and to achieve their great potential.

Marshall University
West Virginia Autism Training Center, which is houses at Marshall University, offers a fee-based college program to individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome. Graduate students assist special needs participants improve their time management, complete assignments and develop better social and independent living skills. Students keep in touch with their advisors, professors and other support staff.

Mercyhurst University
Mercyhurst University’s Learning Differences Program offers two (2) levels of services for students with learning, physical and/or sensory disabilities and who provide current documentation of a diagnosed disability. The Program’s mission is to identify and reduce physical, programmatic and attitudinal barriers for students so that their opportunities for achievement may be equalized while supporting academic integrity. The Autism Initiative
focuses on assisting those with Autism and other high-functioning forms of autism adapt to campus life.

Misericordia University
The Alternative Learners Project (ALP) provides comprehensive on-campus support to students with learning disabilities. In their first year, students with learning disabilities will participate in the BRIDGE Program to better adapt to campus life. Upon completion, students receive assistance with a variety of learning strategies and work with a professional to develop an individual accommodation program

Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
Students who enroll at SIU have full access to on-campus disability support services. Students can also utilize the Achieve Program. Achieve is a free academic support program for students with learning disabilities.  They are supported by specialists, graduate students and volunteers to assist with any needed accommodations, tutoring, and counseling.

University of Arizona, Tucson
Special needs students at the University of Arizona, Tucson are served by the Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques Center (SALT).  Students are assigned a Strategic Learning Specialist, who creates an individualized learning plan designed to help them succeed academically. They can access tutoring and computer labs, along with workshops to help with the transition to college.

University of Connecticut
The Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) provides assistance to students with a variety of learning challenges and disabilities.
The Center assists students to maximize their potential while helping them develop and maintain independence. Our philosophy is one that promotes self-awareness, self-determination, and self-advocacy in a comprehensively accessible environment.  Students in high school can prepare early with the college’s UCPREP summer course, a six-day camp that will help them build studying, learning and independent living skills.

University of Denver
The Disability Services Office offers students with learning disabilities The Learning Effectiveness Program.  It provides a wide range of academic services and accommodations, including one-on-one support, tutoring, writing workshops, student activities, leadership projects and help with developing organization and time management skills.

University of Iowa
The University of Iowa offers students with intellectual, cognitive and learning disabilities access to the REACH Programs. UI REACH provides a Big Ten campus experience to empower young adults to become independent, engaged members of the community. Courses, campus life, and career preparation assist students in reaching their full potential. 

University of the Ozarks
The Jones Learning Center(JLC) on the campus of the University of the Ozarks provides a comprehensive fee-based program designed for students with learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with the skill sets and support to succeed academically and build brighter futures.
